To improve our country, we need fresh ideas that can be acted upon. One such idea is the “fast train system”. There are a number of locations across Australia where a fast train system (just like Japan has) would be ideal. For years they’ve talked about implementing a fast train from Canberra to Sydney. However a fast train from the Gold Coast (Australia’s 6th largest city and the largest non-capital city) to Brisbane CBD would have a huge impact, taking a lot of traffic off the busy roads. This fast train would only take approximately 35 mins, allowing for a stop in say Logan, halving the current driving time. What this would mean is that many Australians could live on the Gold Coast, where unemployment is higher, yet be comfortably employed in Brisbane where there are a lot more jobs. This would boost real estate prices on the Gold Coast turning a poor performing property market into a higher performing market. And, importantly, the infrastructure would be cheaper too, because the distance is less than that from Canberra to Sydney. There’s also a much higher demand on this route.

So why hasn’t it happened already? It’s simple: lack of planning and lack of action. There are other suggested future routes for fast trains too. Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast is another popular route. One with sufficient demand to justify the costs. Another area being considered is Melbourne to Albury. This would connect regional Victorian cities (including Shepparton) as well. Ultimately that line would be connected to Canberra and on through to Sydney; then Sydney to the Gold Coast and Brisbane. The truth is, this idea has been discussed for sometime however it’s yet to get started.
